We are delighted to announce the launch of ROOTS AND RECIPES: The Science of Food, Identity and Belonging, an exciting new project funded by the European Union. The project is implemented through a partnership between The Food Bridge vzw, AfricaMuseum, Meise Botanic Garden, KU Leuven, and Scivil.
ROOTS AND RECIPES explores the rich food heritage of African diaspora communities in Belgium and highlights how food connects science, culture, history, identity, health, biodiversity, and belonging. By bringing together African diaspora communities, researchers, museum professionals, students, and teachers, the project creates an inclusive platform where academic and community knowledge can meet, fostering meaningful dialogue and citizen participation in research.
The main goal of the project is to engage audiences that have traditionally been underrepresented in research. Through citizen science activities, educational programmes, exhibitions, and public engagement, ROOTS AND RECIPES seeks to make science more accessible, inclusive, interesting and relevant to everyone.
Join Us at the European Researchers' Night!
As part of the project, we invite African diaspora food initiatives, community organisations, entrepreneurs, researchers, NGOs, development agencies and the general public to the ROOTS AND RECIPES Fair, taking place on the 26th of September 2026 at the AfricaMuseum Tervuren Belgium.
The Roots & Recipes celebrations will run from 25–26 September 2026, featuring film screenings, exhibitions, interactive fairs, workshops, demonstrations, and educational activities open to the public. Together, these events will celebrate African Diaspora foodways while inspiring conversations about science, culture, sustainability and identity.
This event is helping preserve, promote, research and innovate African food heritage, with this unique celebration of science, culture and community! Join us at the event, let's discover how food can connect people, generate knowledge, and strengthen a sense of identity and belonging.
